Fused Glass
Fused glass is a technique in which two or more layers of glass are stacked and put in the kiln and heated to 1450 - 1500 degrees. The layers of glass will become soft enough at this temperature to melt together and become one piece of glass. This is a very simplified version of what really takes place.
Although glass fusing has been around for thousands of years, it began gaining popularity in the 1980’s through the efforts of some well known glass artists in an infamous place named “Camp Colton” in Oregon. Laura was fortunate to have studied with those early pioneers and has many fond memories of her experiences there.
Today with input from Colton, glass manufactures are making compatible glasses which allow proper coefficient of expansion and contraction that help artists to create unique fused glass artwork with consistent success.
The process of fused glass involves design, and fabrication of the piece, a staged heating process, sometimes manipulation of the hot glass, cooling, annealing and ultimately bringing the piece to ambient temperature. Once the piece is fused it can then be slumped, into or over a mold to create a bowl, vessel or just about anything you can imagine.
Most recently, fused glass has been brought into kitchens and bathrooms through its use in fused glass tiles and sinks. Our fused glass studio is equipped with top of the line fusing kilns, cold-working equipment and the creativity that Laura and I bring to each piece.
Glass Jewelry
Glass working is an ancient technique dating back 4000 years. The mixture of sand, lime, ash and various metal oxides has not changed much, but the embellishments have advanced over the years.
Our jewelry goes through many stages to achieve the final result, and though some patterns are similar, none are exactly the same. Your art glass jewelry is a unique piece of wearable art.
